The destroyer NRP Douro (D332) patrols the waters of the North Atlantic, on a reconnaissance mission near the Canary Islands. Suddenly, a radio message from the Ponta Delgada Naval Base alerts to the presence of a squadron of enemy submarines.
As the destroyer commander, you immediately order your crew to prepare the K-gun MK6 vertical launchers and all available depth charges as you navigate toward danger…
Carga de Profundidade was inspired by two arcade classics from the 1970s: “Depthcharge” and “Destroyer,” both from 1977. They share the same theme, but the gameplay differs in subtle ways. In Depthcharge’s arcade, we control the direction of the ship and the charges detonate when colliding with the submarines. In Destroyer, however, we only control the ship’s speed, and the charges explode at a depth determined by a dial button.
In this version for the ZX Spectrum 48K, the two mechanics are combined: the directional control of the ship and the floating mines of Depthcharge, plus the depth sight and variety of submarines of the Destroyer. The time limit is increased and a torpedo is launched by the larger submarine.
Carga de Profundidade was specially programmed for the 40th anniversary edition of Revista Micro Sistemas, also sold here. You can download a digital version (with source code) here.

Mission
In another alternative reality, the Third Reich gives up on the invasion of the Soviet Union and the stage of war definitely turns to the West. Mainland Portugal was invaded by the Axis and the Portuguese government took refuge in the colonies of southern Africa. Thousands of civilians are received in Brazil on merchant ships.
A part of the Portuguese navy finds safety in the Azores archipelago, now occupied by the north americans. On this strategic base, the Allies seek to ensure the free passage of merchant ships that keep the flame of British resistance alive…

Controls
You command a destroyer whose mission is to destroy all types of submarines that cross within range of your depth charges. For this we must use a crosshair represented by a horizontal dashed line, moved vertically with the “Q” and “A” keys up and down respectively. The “M” and “Space” keys trigger the launch of the charge that will explode to the depth determined by the Y-coordinate of the crosshair.
The “O” and “P” keys for left and right, respectively, allow maneuvering the destroyer on the surface, to avoid floating mines or torpedoes launched by submarines. Each submarine destroyed will be worth a base score to which additional points are added for the submarine’s speed and depth.
We only have 300 seconds to break the 2000 point record. If the ship is hit by a torpedo or mine, the score is halved. The “1” key allows you to pause the game for a strategic rest.
