A revived homebrew by pioneer Portuguese game developer Zé Oliveira, originally started in 1984 and completed in 2023, now featuring illustrated face cards.

This is the first title of the SILVER COLLECTION, a series dedicated to celebrating lesser-known ZX Spectrum games in a unified, affordable, and collectable edition.

Description

In 1984, Zé Oliveira watched a school friend spend far too much money playing a particular card game. During the Christmas holidays, he decided to create his own version for the ZX Spectrum.

University life soon caught up with him, and the project remained unfinished: there was no loading screen, and the queen, jack, and king cards were left without illustrations.

Nearly four decades later, in 2023, Zé Oliveira returned to the project, completed the missing artwork, and finally compiled the game.

Poker 2023 preserves the charm of its original era while giving new life to a small personal project from the golden days of the Spectrum. This version was also featured in the tutorial for the 2024 BASIC Apascalado Contest, jointly organised by Zé Oliveira and Planeta Sinclair.

Who is the author?

Zé Oliveira developed the games Laser and Bala for the Sinclair ZX81 in 1982, works often cited among the earliest video games created in Portugal.

He remains active in the retro scene through Planeta Sinclair, where he has collaborated on initiatives such as the BASIC Apascalado Contest. Together with his son David, he continues to explore and promote classic programming on vintage microcomputers.
